My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me. I give them eternal life, and they will never perish. No one can snatch them away from me…”
John 10:27-28, 30a NLT
According to Strong’s concordance the Greek word “sōzō” (4982) means “to save, deliver, protect, heal, preserve, do well, and be made whole.” (see Romans 5:9-10; 8:24; 9:27; 10:9; 10:13; 11:14; 11:26)
We can clearly see that “sozo” includes healing and being made whole – totally well in spirit, soul and body. So – whenever I read the word “save”, I say the whole list of meanings, I can’t tell you how much this has helped me to grow in my faith.
WE WERE, ARE, AND WILL BE SAVED.
We WERE saved – when we trusted and confessed the Lord Jesus Christ through repentance and FAITH in HIS WORDS, our spirit man, which was dead in sin, is made alive in Christ – we call this JUSTIFCATION.
We are BEING saved – as we follow Him and grow in our calling and service and seek Him in His word, He RESTORES our soul by renewing our mind, will and emotions – we call this SANCTIFICATION.
We WILL BE saved – on the glorious day our BODIES which are wasting away will be resurrected – we call this REDEMPTION.
WE HAVE ETERNAL SECURITY
How can you be sure you have eternal security? Because of the blessedness of this passage – 1 Thessalonians 1:10 which tells us that we wait for the return of the Lord Jesus Christ (our blessed hope) who “delivers us from the wrath to come”. It teaches a truth that many never grasp and that truth is this: IF you are a believer, you have eternal security with the Lord Jesus Christ.
An example of NOT having this eternal security would be like a child who did not know from day to day whether or not they were a member of their own family. If they were good one day, they were in, if they were bad another time, then they were out. One day their father loved them, the next day, he didn’t. I tell you that child would be an emotional and psychological wreck.
The Fact is, regardless of YOUR behaviour, if you are God’s son you always going to be a member of his family and there is nothing you, or anyone else can do about it (other than decide to renounce it for some reason!) Why is that…? Because you were born into His family and no-one is able to countermand Gods word, you see, if you are in Jesus, you are a part of the family and you can experience all the peace and security that He wants all of His children to enjoy.
During the construction of the Golden Gate Bridge, civil engineering projects assumed one worker death per $1 million spent. The Golden Gate Bridge cost $35 million. In 1936, when delays slowed construction, $130,000 was invested in a novel safety feature: a vast net suspended under the bridge. The safety net extended ten feet wider than the bridge’s width and fifteen feet further than the roadway’s length. It gave workers a sense of security as they moved more freely -and quickly – across the slippery, half-constructed steel. After they were in place, only a handful fell, and they were safe, the work was completed in record time and with record safety sucess. Why? Because the workers could concentrate on their jobs and not have to worry about dying!
To be a productive Christian you need to know that your future is absolutely secure. If you are to do a great work for Jesus, then you need to be able to focus on the task at hand, instead of always worrying about your future. This type of fear and doubt cripples us and prevents us from reaching our full potential as believers, it also prevents some from being saved. They fear that they do not have the ability to live out their Christian lives. The fact is, they don’t, but neither do they understand that it is Christ living in the believer that makes Christianity possible.
I want By God’s help, to suggest that we can know for sure that you have eternal security. Next to salvation, the greatest blessing in life is knowing that you are eternally saved.
Before we discuss why the believer is eternally secure, we all need to be on the same page. We need to define our terms.
JUST WHO IS A BELIEVER?
A believer is one who has received Jesus into his heart, as Savior, by faith. A believer is trusting Jesus Christ, totally, for salvation.
A believer is born again, (John 3:3) and has been made a partaker of the Divine nature, 2 Peter 1:4. I believe that this person can never be lost again!
In the early 19th centrury a performer called Blondin would tightrope walk across the Niagara falls and attracted huge crowds waiting to see if he would fall. A dignitary was asked by Blondin if he thought that Blondin would, not only be able to walk across the rope, but to push a wheelbarrow across?
The dignitary answered Yes. He did believe Blondin could do this, Blondin responded – good – HOP IN!
And HERE is the definition of a believer – someone who doesn’t only believe in their head that Jesus is a real person, BUT who has hopped into the barrow and FULLY GIVEN their future into HIS SAFE HANDS to protect and direct. You may feel that’s a bit radical BUT I believe There is nothing more important than a person to be SAVED and to trust Jesus day by day!
This salvation comes when we truly choose to humble ourselves and let God know more than me – and humbly ask Him to forgive us our rebellion and invite him to take the reigns of my life!
The day you do that you will KNOW his peace and a security in your life that the world cannot take away!
Why then would people choose not to be blessed, saved, made whole, healed and restored? I believe this is mainly that our unregenerate mind cannot perceive the goodness of God to keep us and care for us as a shepherd cares for his flock. We have been embittered by a harsh world and learned to become cynical and cold, and so doubt the truth of God and not take Him at his word.
But, what about those who appear to be saved, but now have no interest in spiritual things? I would answer that they have never truly been saved! They perhaps made a public profession of faith — they may have looked “Christian”, but have possibly never been saved and like Judas – they probably never believed.
FINALLY – For those who are truly trusting Jesus, allow me to show you some reasons why you can have assurance of your eternal salvation.
The most compelling reason is –
The Lord Jesus taught this truth –
“Truly, truly, I say to you, he who hears My word, and believes Him who sent Me, has [present tense] eternal life, and does not come into [future tense] judgment, but has passed [past tense] out of death into life.’ John 5:24
Note that true believers have been covered — past, present and future. This is salvation.
Consider this : If the believer was saved for 100 years and then lost, what he had was only a 100 year life; – but NOT “eternal life”. Eternal life by definition means that it cannot come to an end. We must also understand that eternal life is more than just length of time, it also speaks of abundance and intimacy with God.
John 17:3 NIV – Now this is eternal life: that they know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom you have sent.
The lost person will live after death but is never said in the Bible to have Eternal Life. “Then they will go away to eternal punishment, but the righteous to eternal life.”
Matthew 25:46 NIV
The Apostle John taught this truth.
“And this is what he promised us—eternal life.”
1 John 2:25 NIV
The Apostle Jude taught this truth.
“To him who is able to keep you from stumbling and to present you before his glorious presence without fault and with great joy— to the only God our Savior be glory, majesty, power and authority, through Jesus Christ our Lord, before all ages, now and forevermore! Amen.”
Jude 1:24-25 NIV
The Apostle Paul taught this truth.
“Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus”
Romans 8:1 NIV
The Apostle Peter taught this truth.
“Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! In his great mercy he has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, and into an inheritance that can never perish, spoil or fade. This inheritance is kept in heaven for you, who through faith are shielded by God’s power until the coming of the salvation that is ready to be revealed in the last time. In all this you greatly rejoice, though now for a little while you may have had to suffer grief in all kinds of trials.”
The writer to the Hebrews taught this truth
“Let your character or moral disposition be free from love of money [including greed, avarice, lust, and craving for earthly possessions] and be satisfied with your present [circumstances and with what you have]; for He [God] Himself has said, I will not in any way fail you nor give you up nor leave you without support. [I will] not, [I will] not, [I will] not in any degree leave you helpless nor forsake nor let [you] down (relax My hold on you)! [Assuredly not!] [Josh. 1:5.] So we take comfort and are encouraged and confidently and boldly say, The Lord is my Helper; I will not be seized with alarm [I will not fear or dread or be terrified]. What can man do to me? [Ps. 27:1;118:6.]
Hebrews 13.5-6. AMP
OUR security, past present and future can be secured once and for all time — the only question is whether we have put our lives in the hands of the ONLY one qualified to be an all sufficient saviour.
